What is an IMU?


Revopoint MIRACO comes equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a technology that has been around since the 1940s but has evolved significantly over time. IMUs, as seen in devices like MIRACO 3D scanner, play a crucial role in enhancing the scanning experience.

What is an IMU?

In simple terms, an IMU tracks position, orientation, and velocity, aiding a device in understanding its location. This technology, featuring tiny gyroscopes, accelerometers, and sometimes magnetometers, has found its way into various devices, from drones and smartphones to gaming controllers.

Components and Functionality

  1. Gyroscopes:

    • Measure the angular attitude of MIRACO.

    • Tiny gyroscopes function by having small masses vibrate in opposite directions, with Coriolis forces determining the angular attitude.

  2. Accelerometer:

    • Measures device acceleration during movement.

    • Utilizes the Piezoelectric effect, where microscopic crystal structures generate voltage when vibrating. The voltage level indicates the acceleration experienced by the device.

  3. Magnetometer:

    • Acts as an electronic compass, measuring Earth's magnetic field's strength and direction.

    • Provides a reference point for gyroscopes and accelerometers, preventing IMU positioning drift. Periodic recalibration may still be necessary for sustained accuracy.

Incorporating an IMU into the MIRACO or 3D scanner elevates the scanning experience by addressing challenges related to stability, frame accuracy, and overall scan quality. This technology enhances the user's ability to capture detailed and reliable 3D scans.
